Arklow, a viking town? Talk with Dr Stephen Harrison at the Arklow Maritime Museum
ARKLOW, A VIKING TOWN?
On Thursday, 4 April, from 8 pm, the Arklow Maritime Museum will host a talk by Dr Stephen Harrison, of Glasgow University, that is sure to create a lot of interest in Arklow’s past.
Dr Harrison has studied the Viking period for many years and is the co-author of books such as Viking Graves and Grave-Goods in Ireland and The Vikings in Britain and Ireland. He wrote his BA dissertation on Viking and Anglo-Norman Arklow over thirty years ago. He has recently resumed that research, uncovering a great deal of new information, some of which will challenge long-held assumptions.
His latest paper on the subject is ‘Arklow & the Cistercians – A Medieval Borough and Manor Reconsidered’ which was recently published in V. McAlister & L. Shine (eds), Rethinking Medieval Ireland and Beyond: Life Cycles, Landscapes and Settlement.
The talk which will last 45-60 minutes will be followed by a Question-and-Answer session. It should prove a very interesting evening. It begins at 8pm sharp and has a maximum capacity is 60, admission will be on a first-come-first-served basis.
This event is a collaboration between Arklow Maritime Museum and The Wicklow Community Archaeology Project, which is funded by The Heritage Council and Wicklow County Council through the County Heritage Plan Fund 2024.
